Egyptian Museum Becomes World’s Most Visited

The Grand Egyptian Museum topped the list of the world’s most visited museums after welcoming over 6.5 million visitors in its opening months. It opened officially on November 1, 2025, with numerous world leaders in attendance, and is the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization.

The museum earned international recognition early in 2026. TIME included it among its World’s Greatest Places for 2026, noting it spans 5.4 million square feet and houses some 100,000 artifacts representing 7,000 years of history. Its centrepiece is the first complete public display of all artifacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb since its discovery in 1922.

The museum is also a win for heritage stewardship. Secure, climate-controlled galleries let Egypt conserve its antiquities better, and strengthen efforts to see major works returned from overseas collections.

The economic effect has been large. Egypt reportedly welcomed 5.6 million tourists in the first quarter of 2026, a 43.5% increase on the same period in 2025. Government figures put arrivals at 6.1 million in the first four months of 2026. The museum has been a major driver of this growth.

Date: September 24, 2026 (visitor milestone). TIME named it a World’s Greatest Place on March 12, 2026.
