Swaziland Unites Against Rabies

The Kingdom Of Eswatini, also known as Swaziland, is uniting to eliminate rabies from the country.

The Government of Eswatini is Collaborating with The World Health Organization (WHO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Swaziland Animal Welfare Society in kicking out rabies from the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture through the Veterinary Department together with the Ministry of Health, Eswatini Royal Police, other government sectors and the Malindza community in the Lubombo region held a community event “Rabies: Vaccinate to Eliminate”, to mark the World Rabies Day. The event was aimed at raising awareness about human and animal rabies, prevention, and elimination.

The Kingdom of Eswatini is working keenly in ending human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. As such, veterinary Department of the ministry of agriculture has embarked on a nationwide dog vaccination program. The program will see dogs vaccinated against rabies while the citizens will be made aware of how to avoid the bites of rabid dogs, to seek treatment when bitten and to vaccinate animals can disrupt the rabies transmission cycle.
The speakers at the event stressed the importance of prevention of rabies as the key tool for the reduction in death that arises from rabies. Human deaths due to dog mediated rabies can be eliminated in Eswatini.
