Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed awarded Nobel Peace Prize

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, The Prime Minister Of Ethiopia has been awarded The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in achieving peace and international cooperation. The prime minister was named the winner of the 100th Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo

In July 2018, Ethiopia signed a peace accord with Eritrea, ending a 20-year military stalemate following their 1998-2000 border war.

Berit Reiss-Andersen, the committee’s chair, said the award recognised Abiy’s “efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea”.

The prize, worth nine million Swedish crowns (about £730,000; $900,000), will be awarded in Oslo in December. A total of 301 candidates had been nominated for the prestigious award, including 223 individuals and 78 organisations. However, the committee does not announce the names of nominees until 50 years have passed.

Chairman of the African Union and president of Chad’s, Moussa Faki, took to his twitter page to send his congratulatory message to the Ethiopian prime minister.

“It is with great pride that I congratulate Ethiopian PM @AbiyAhmedAli on being the 100th recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his historic peace building efforts that have given the world hope at a time it needs servant leadership more than ever,” Chairman’s Moussa said.
