Algeria will hold its general elections today to elect new country leaders.
After almost 10 months of a political crisis in the country, citizens of Algeria will today vote for a new president.
The electoral process has faced several
protests by opposition group as they see it as a regime ploy to cling on to power.
Over 24 million people are expected to cast their votes today including 1 million Algerians living in the diaspora who commenced voting a few days earlier.
Five candidates are vying for the post of the presidency, seeking to replace the former leader, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned in April 2nd after his plans for a 5th term was met with a nationwide protest.
The country’s opposition doesn’t support the election. They are calling for electoral reform before any elections must be held.
